The 1 TB internal Fusion Drive is formatted to APFS and was modified on.

the 4TB WC external drive is formatted Mac OS Extended and not APFS. Great information and this is what is causing my problem. Might be time to replace it, but it runs perfectly and I'm very, very pleased with it. I'm really concerned that I can't recover the backup files on this iMac. Is there a fix for this problem? Does Time Machine not work on this Western Digital external drive.

There is a series of questions and comments on this problem in the user forums, but the correspondence is old, several months ago. Something about it being designed for SSD drives. Also some information that there are problems with Time Machine on WD external hard drives. I've seen some information that Big Sur should run on this computer. Restoring the original state found as mounted. After several minutes the following information appeared on the screen: Running FirstAid on "My Book" (disk3s2). I ran DiskUtility on the WC external drive "My Book partition" and it failed. Not sure when I first updated to Big Sur. Really not sure which OS I was running then, I think it was the latest version of Catalina. I looked at the files on the WD external drive and the file structure looks normal and I can see folders for each of the back ups going back to the date I installed the drive and did a complete backup, which worked. Escape takes me out of time machine and all seems to be working fine otherwise. Same problem, only a big black box on the screen. I updated to 11.5.1 as I saw some reports that there were some problems with 11.5. The dates and times of Time Machine backups are shown on the right side of the screen and go back to the date I installed the WD external drive. I just noticed yesterday that when I enter Time Machine I get a Black box that covers 2/3 of my screen.

Big Sur 11.5.1 is supposed to run on this computer and it does, with the exception of Time Machine. I'm using an iMac Retina 5K, 27", Mid 2015 purchased from Apple on May 22, 2015. I believe I was still running Cataline, but not sure. I replaced my external hard drive used with Time Machine in November 2020 with a Western Digital 4TB My Book Desktop external HardDrive, USB 3.0 in November 2020.
